Grade 5 Unit 3 Overview of Opinion/Argument Unit
The main difference between argument and opinion is ‘Opinions are personal beliefs’ and ‘Arguments are reasons (which can include facts) given to support a point of view’ – Stella Cottrell (2003, p179). Both opinion and argument are addressed in the writing unit. The primary focus in reading is on texts that are examples of Argument Writing. The CCSS moves from the term “opinion” to argument” between 5th and 6th grade so the decision was made to use both terms and consider instructional practices and learning activities to support both. Use them as appropriate when teaching. Introductory experiences to debate are included in both reading and writing.
