In my persistent journey to be up to date with the newest educational research, I’ve learned about Kylene Beers and Bob Probst. They are the foremost educational researchers when dealing with fictional text and informational text. Because of my reading, I have learned about the three big questions when reading non fiction, as well as non fiction signposts.
1) What surprised me?
2) What does the author think I already know?
3) What challenged, changed, or confirmed what I already know.
During the next few weeks, we will be covering these three big questions. My eventual goal is to have student interact more with informational text, not just be able to regurgitate facts. That’s not the purpose of non fiction. I will be posting helpful charts, videos, and other resources I think you will find useful. Be sure to check back. With that being said, here is a video that I used in class about the question “What surprised me?”
