Today I started Day one of our “Close reading” lessons. Students listened to “Boyfriend” by Justin Bieber and wrote down what they thought the song was about. Then they read the lyrics to the song in small groups to see if they gained any new information about the lyrics that they missed during the listening activity and wrote that down in their reader’s notebook. It was interesting to see how their responses grew from one activity to the next.
I used the music hook to engage students and then related it to the importance of reading a text multiple times to discover new information each time. We them read and re-read two pages of “One for the Murphys” to gain new information about Daniel, a key character in the story.
